Почему ранний доступ?

“Because we want to make a very fun game for the gamers, we need their ideas and feedback. Because Steam is the biggest distribution platform on the internet it was our goal to launch the game on Steam. On Steam we know we can get the best feedback to make our game LEGENDARY. Also this game so far is made with a 0€ budget and because graphics cost money and sadly can’t do them myself we need a budget, because some Kickstarter projects ended up being a disaster we’re already giving you early access to our game including Steam achievements and trading cards to collect.

During each update we will put up new levels with different play styles. According to the feedback of users we will tweak to make them easier or harder (More challenging).”

Сколько примерно эта игра будет в раннем доступе?

Чем планируемая полная версия будет отличаться от версии в раннем доступе?

“The full version will have better graphics and over 100 levels of different challenges. During these challenge you could be either flying/driving a vehicle trying to escape from the evil planet, or walking your way through an upside-down level, dark levels in which you only have a short amount of sight, under water levels in which you don’t need to jump, but you need to be carefull for swimming enemies. Also some missions will not just be go from point A to point B, but there will be levels in which you need to collect objects. When you collected all objects you are able to go to the next level with a new challenge. There also will be different settings. Lava levels which are way harder than normal levels and ice levels which can be very untrustfull (With slippery tiles and cracking through ice).

All levels will have a puzzle element. This means you will need the transform powers to get through the level. Most levels are solvable in different ways.

The Blob will also have more powers to use. These powers will be unlocked during the story mode. These powers are slowing down enemies and jumping against walls. There will be over 10 enemies all with their special powers. These powers are needed to solve puzzles in levels. This game will offer you a very fun gaming experience. A game experience in which you can challenge your friends to beat your highscore. We also will add a leaderboards so you can challenge people all around the world to beat your highscore.

This game will even feature local co-op mode in the full version. Play with your friend on the same computer. In these co-op mode you will need to help eachother or play against eachother to get the best score.

During Early Access we will try to put out an update every month or every 2 months with new levels, features and achievements.”

Об этой игре

With this game we try to challenge the player to finish the entire game with only 3 continues.

There are no save points so you have to make the entire run in one go.

If you have friends (Or the internet) you can share cheat codes to skip some levels, but don’t forget you will not get the maximum amount of points and maybe not able to unlock certain achievements using cheat codes. The choice is yours.

With this game we’re trying to get back to the old retro gaming age. Of course back in the time we didn’t had Steam and it’s awesome features, so it’s not completely back to the retro gaming age.

We try to make the game challenging as possible. Easy to learn to play, but you will need some skill to complete the game, because the further you get in the game, the harder the challenges will be. At some point you will have less vision, or maybe you’re Blob will be upside-down.

Paying homage to games from the earliest days of video gaming, Blob From Out of Space is easy to play, but difficult to complete 2D side scroller.

Blob is flying through space when his UFO gets shot down by a rocket and crash lands on an unknown planet. Blobs brother is promptly captured by the planets evil leader and it’s up to Blob to save him and to escape from the planet.

How the game plays is up to you. Each decision opens up a new path. Collecting diamonds opens up more choices, but with them comes addition risk. With only 3 continues available and no save, risk is a bad thing! Discovered a cheat? Share it with your friends, but use a cheat and you won’t get the maximum number of points. The choice is yours.

This game has:

  • Controller support
  • Local Co-op
  • Trading cards
  • Achievements

Special Blob powers

  • Transform into enemies
  • Stick powers — slow down enemies
  • Wall jumping — jump against walls and jump again to reach places you were never able to reach without wall jumping

To make the game more challenging during the story we will be adding new gameplay features every update.

Gameplay features:

  • Over 100 levels including Dark levels (play with only a small amount of the screen visible); Vehicles levels (drive/fly a vehicle and avoid explosions and bombs); Underwater levels (no jumping, but watch out for water creatures)
  • Great learning curve
  • Mini games — Diamond Rush and Retro Blob (Puzzle game)
  • Challenge your friends in YOLO Mode
  • Play with friends in local co-op mode

Relaxing game modes:

  • Diamond Rush
  • Retro Blob (Puzzle game)

Based on community feedback, we will be delivering regular updates including upside-down levels.

Обзоры Tales from Space: About a Blob

Инопланетное вторжение на нашу многострадальную планету — сегодня настолько заезженная тема как и очередные «снова Вторая Мировая» или «опять плохие русские». Действительно интересные проекты по ней выходят очень редко. И Tales from Space: About a Blob — один из них. Вкратце, это двухмерный платформер, сделанный в традициях трэшевых ужастиков вроде «Нападение помидоров-убийц».

While it’s difficult at points, I was never frustrated or felt like I was dying because of a flaw in the level design. It’s got an engaging (and often hilarious) art style and makes the most of its simple, static cutscenes and paper-thin plot.

Despite its rougher edges, Tales from Space: About a Blob is a genuinely fun – and funny – romp through classic sci-fi tropes. The feeling of piloting a gelatinous character is more than enough to set the game apart from its sidescrolling brethren, but, it’s the unique gameplay and sense of style that truly absorbs you.

It does have a couple issues, sure, but overall I think it’s worth checking out. Also, the online leaderboard function works great, and the game offers up plenty of chances to challenge yourself via speed runs if you’re looking to compete against your friends list.

It isn’t a Katamari game, but Drinkbox Studios did a fine job of recreating the mechanic and turning it into something of their own. This isn’t the best game on PSN, but it is a worthy addition to your collection.

Any game with such a premise is inevitably, and unconsciously, drawn into comparison with Katamari Damacy, which is pretty much universally beloved. Having to be measured against something like that makes any game seem worse. And from that perspective, the not-bad About a Blob seems bland.

Review: Tales from Space: About a Blob

If alien blobs that suck up everything in sight were ever to have crash landed on Earth, the general public would probably go nuts. They’d eat our people, our cars, our buildings and all the nice things we’ve come to know over time. It’s understandable that the citizens of Tales from Space: About a Blob‘s world react accordingly. If only they’d let the little guys blast back off into space.

About a Blob doesn’t have too many shortcomings. It offers the taste of a retro-style puzzle-solving platformer in a current-generation package. You play as an orange blob, captured by a scientist after crash-landing on Earth, desperately trying to escape the planet. You start off small enough to fit inside a test tube and eventually grow big enough to swallow entire buildings. Every level gives you specific weights to reach in order to progress. They’re rarely hard to achieve; usually the objects needed for the blob to grow are laid out right in front of you.

Throughout the blob’s adventures — which range from areas including laboratories, farms, towns, school yards, and cities — he’ll learn two key abilities. These are aside from the two abilities he starts with, which include a body slam and a sort-of cannon that shoots out what you’ve already sucked in (to take down enemies!). The first, a magnetic skill, allows him to attach and retract from metal objects at will. The second, an electric skill, allows him to suck up electricity from one machine and transfer it to another. The majority of the game revolves around these abilities, but they’re always presented in fresh new methods. A favorite of mine was a zig-zaggy area towards the end of the game, where the ground was a metal pipe decorated in spikes; in order to progress, I had to retract from the metal and basically ‘float’ my way through the domain.

About a Blob‘s story mode is broken down into four parts. The first part has four stages, the second has six, the third has five, and the fourth has two, comparatively longer, stages. There are a few boss fights, as well. That being said, you’ll come across plenty of enemies in the story mode. They’re not other blobs or humans, or anything like that, but rather cannons and machinery dedicated solely to firing missiles and other explosives at the blob. Depending on the type of cannon and/or your size, you can take them out with a set number of shots (meaning, shooting out the objects you’ve already sucked in).

Levels are rather well designed. You’ll find yourself swimming through pipes, climbing onto floating landscapes, and avoiding spikes and stomping pieces of machinery. It’s fair to say its unrealistic — but then again, what about Tales from Space‘s setting sounds realistic to begin with? They’re fun and easy to get used to, though, and offer some amusing puzzles for players to solve — though, none are particularly mind-boggling.

Each stage offers a couple of optional challenges. Finding your blob companions is is one of them; each level has three blobs scattered about for players to seek. Beating the stage within a certain amount of time is the other. Personally, I don’t care too much about these challenges, as I just want to play and enjoy the game, but now that the game’s ended, I might go back and try to earn a Gold trophy for each level. It’s pretty much where its replay value kicks in.

A big aspect of About a Blob, and something we don’t see too much anymore, is local co-op. You and your friend can work through the platformer’s puzzles together, side-by-side. One of it’s greater advantages is using each other to perform a jump boost, allowing you access to locations (and possibly hidden blob companions) not accessible otherwise. Though, without proper coordination, local co-op can turn out to be more of a frustration than it is fun (players must both be on screen at the same time) — so be sure to coordinate! There’s a small competitive element in there, as well. You and a friend can compete to see who absorbs the most objects during your run together. The lack of online co-op is saddening, but it’s not so big a problem that it takes away from the game. Online co-op or not, About a Blob is a joy to play.

The overall feel of the game is heartwarming. It kind of reminded me of The Jetsons at certain points — maybe it was the flying cars in the city stages, who knows? I also noticed a a good amount of humorous propaganda and other types of fake advertisements in the game. One poster found on a wall in the elementary school level read something along the lines of: ‘WORD! To your mother!’ The phrase alone makes me giggle. Ah, the school days.

About a Blob is a solid game, contrary to its star player. The game’s not too long, unfortunately, but if you’re looking for a game that’ll make you feel like you’re watching Saturday morning cartoons again, then Tales from Space is definitely for you. It’s charming art style, witty remarks, and simple gameplay makes it well worth the purchase.

I heard about this game back when it was shown at E3 2010, and then suddenly it disappeared. Log on to PSN the other day and there it was again!

Wasn’t really sure if it was worth the $15 dollars or not, but after playing the demo, I knew this game had potential.

The eyes + the blob jiggle factor = awesomeness! But seriously the graphics are crisp and the gameplay is fun and addictive.

There are only a few levels playable in the demo, but you can save your progress and continue in the full game once you buy it, so no need to back track either.

It’s a shame they only let Playstation Plus members download it, but I think it should be available for the general public anytime now.

Tales From Space: About A Blob Review (PS3)

Tales From Space: About A Blob is an enjoyable platformer with an emphasis on controller dexterity and clever puzzle design

It’s an easy scenario to picture: developers Drinkbox Studios gathered around a large conference table laced with paper, pencils and plates of those round biscuits that aren’t quite Custard Creams nor Jammie Dodgers. «How about something to do with a giant, shape-shifting space blob?» one of the suited occupants around the table suggests.

The rest is of course history. In fact, we’re convinced there’s no better video game starting point than the ol’ blob cliche. Tales From Space: About A Blob is a predictable puzzle platformer with some unique mechanical twists. Set to a Saturday morning visual aesthetic, About A Blob plots the path of a mysterious group of space-raiding alien boogers with eyes bigger than their bellies. The chief gameplay mechanic is simple — and presumably inspired by the likes of Katamari and its sequence of clones — hold L2 to scoff and expand your blob’s increasing mass. The more you eat, the more you grow; the more you grow, the more you can eat. It’s a simple premise but its accentuated by a terrific sense of scale. You’ll start the game as a popcorn vacuuming splodge on the shelf of a mad scientist’s laboratory, but before long you’ll be in the urban wilderness chased by tanks and helicopters — and latterly gobbling them up before they can take a pot-shot. It all culminates in a super satisfying final quarter as your blob grows to an enormously satisfying size.

Scran isn’t your blob’s only point of interaction though. About A Blob is very much a platformer, and thus much of its gameplay revolves around the core mechanics of any game in the genre. There’s an obligatory run and jump button, with the blob’s weightless sense of inertia resembling something more akin to LittleBigPlanet than Super Mario. While it can be irritatingly imprecise in places, the game is designed around its limitations — platforming is the game’s bread-and-butter, but it’s never particularly challenging.

Instead the game relies on the blob’s other abilities to provide some wildly precise requirements of controller dexterity. See, blob is not just any old blob; he has magnetism and electrical abilities, opening up some really engaging and complex puzzles. Mapped to the shoulder buttons, some of these puzzles require Twister-like feats of finger precision, a dynamic that adds complexity and satisfaction to the completion of these components. Sadly, there are far few puzzles throughout the length of About A Blob’s relatively short campaign, though the ones that are included definitely justify the mechanics. Playing the game co-operatively reduces some of the difficulty of these challenges, though the local multiplayer dynamic adds an amusing, if occasionally frustrating, twist to proceedings.

Visually About A Blob is a real treat. The game’s varying scale and cheeky Saturday morning visuals really suit the gameplay style, and the world is packed with memes and commentaries on popular culture. The visuals are supported by a cheeky, nostalgic sci-fi theme that’s one-part awesome and two-parts repetitive. While the melodies will hook into your head long before you’ve completed the first level, the repetitive nature of the tunes means this isn’t necessarily a good thing. The music suits the tone of the game perfectly though, as does the border vignetting and soft colour palette.

While you’ll easily be able to see off About A Blob’s campaign in an afternoon, Drinkbox will be hoping you replay the game to complete the various sub-challenges attached to each level. Alongside outrageously unattainable speed challenges are collectibles and leaderboards. We didn’t have much interest in pursuing these sub-challenges, but obsessive players will find it hard to ignore the glaring incomplete notices attached to each level’s overview.

At $15 (we’re expecting £9.99 in the UK), About A Blob is toeing the steep-end, but it does a lot to justify its price-tag. The mechanics lead to some excellent puzzle design, and the visual style is varied and compelling. We enjoyed our time with About A Blob, but we’re uncertain if we’ll return to it. That said, even with the advent of the PlayStation Network, there’s been a real lack of well-designed two-dimensional platformers, and About A Blob certainly fills that growing void. It’s fun, quirky and self-aware. Oh, and it also features an orange space-blob. Don’t act like that’s not a selling point.

Conclusion

Tales From Space: About A Blob launches on the PlayStation Store from February 9th.
